Poles are used everywhere in Ottawa — light poles, traffic lights, sports lighting, menu boards, and much more. They require a strong and sturdy base to stay in place.
Typical cast-in-place concrete pole base foundations not only require good weather conditions to install, they also require a lot of time and steps. Check out how easy it is to install Pole Base where you simply auger, place, and backfill. Why not remove all those other steps and have the bases delivered ready to go?
The foundation of these poles is often a pole base made from precast concrete. How does precast concrete provide advantages over pour-in concrete? What makes it more suitable for pole bases? Let’s take a closer look.
What is Precast Concrete?
Precast concrete is a concrete product made by casting concrete in a reusable mould or form, cured in a controlled environment, and transported to the site to be put into place, as opposed to cast-in-place concrete, which is poured into forms on-site.
To make precast concrete, first, the moulds must be prepared. These moulds are reusable and made in the shape that the precast concrete will eventually have. They can be many shapes or sizes.
The concrete will be left to cure in a controlled environment where the temperature and humidity are precisely tuned. Once it has been cured, it will be ready to ship to the job site, where it can be used in applications such as pole bases for buildings in Ottawa.
The Advantage of Precast
Precast concrete has many advantages, making it a perfect choice for pole bases. These advantages include:
· Durability – precast concrete is known for its ability to withstand everyday use. It’s weatherproof, fireproof, resistant to mildew and rust, and can even better withstand the freeze-thaw cycles of winter than other materials.
· Increased Strength Over Time – precast concrete can even become stronger over time. There are precast concrete structures in Europe that are centuries old that are stronger today than when they were built.
· Adaptability – you can make precast concrete in many different shapes and sizes. It can be thick or thin, light or heavy. Just be aware that, if it gets too heavy, the weight can start to become an issue.
· Low Jobsite Impact – since precast concrete doesn’t need to be poured on the site, it minimizes disruption and saves space at your project site. Seasonal interruptions are also minimized as precast can be installed in all weather conditions.
These qualities make precast concrete the perfect product to use for pole bases. We are a certified manufacturer of Pole Base ™.
